The journey from Denpasar takes about two hours, covering roughly 100 km via the scenic Denpasar-Bedugul-Singaraja highway. The monastery's proximity to the renowned Banjar Hot Springs further enhances its appeal. Established with construction beginning in 1969 and completed in 1970, Brahma Vihara Arama was officially inaugurated as a Buddhist monastery in 1973. The name itself is deeply symbolic: 'Brahma' denotes greatness and nobility, 'Vihara' signifies a way of life, and 'Arama' refers to a place. Thus, Brahmavihara Arama embodies a sanctuary dedicated to cultivating noble conduct, encompassing Metta (loving-kindness), Karuna (compassion), Mudita (sympathetic joy), and Upekkha (equanimity). It serves as a significant site for Vipassana Bhavana meditation. This unique spiritual haven beautifully blends Buddhist sanctity with distinct Balinese architectural characteristics. Perched in the hills, it boasts direct views of Lovina Beach, creating a picturesque backdrop for visitors. Among its notable features is a miniature Borobudur, a popular spot for photographs. The monastery houses two prominent Buddha statues: the exquisite Parinirvana Statue and another Buddha figure, both crafted from bronze, adorned with gold, and gifted by Thailand and Sri Lanka in 1977. Furthermore, its gardens are graced with 31 rock-carved Buddha statues, each symbolizing one of the 31 levels of nature beyond Nirvana. Beyond being a place of worship, Brahma Vihara Arama functions as a residence for monks and a vital center for spiritual growth and community engagement, drawing numerous tourists and devotees seeking tranquility and spiritual connection.
