Goa Gajah Temple

Welcome to Goa Gajah Temple, also known as the Elephant Cave Temple, a significant historical site nestled in the west of Blahbatuh Sub-district, Gianyar Regency, Bali, approximately 27 km from Denpasar. This ancient cave temple is uniquely situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Pangkung and Petanu, an area locally referred to as Campuhan, believed to possess magical energy based on the Balinese Rwabineda concept. Dating back to the 10th-11th century AD, during the Warmadewa kingdom, Goa Gajah is renowned for its fascinating blend of Hindu Shiva and Buddhist relics, showcasing a remarkable acculturation of these two religions. The temple's name, 'Goa Gajah,' is thought to derive from 'Lwa Gajah,' referring to a Buddhist hermitage located near the Gajah River, as documented in the Negara Kertagama papyrus from 1365 AD. The site was rediscovered in 1923 by L.C. Heyting, who uncovered significant artifacts including statues of Ganesha, Tri Langga, and Hariti. Subsequent research led to the discovery of a sacred bathing pond in front of the cave entrance, featuring six female statues whose flowing water is traditionally believed to grant youth. Visitors can explore the 'T'-shaped carved cave, adorned with intricate rock carvings depicting a jungle scene. Inside, a revered Ganesha statue, along with fragments of other Hindu Shiva relics like the Trilangga surrounded by eight small phalluses, can be found. The western part of the cave complex also houses Buddhist relics, including a Hariti statue, known as the savior of children. Further exploration leads to the Tukad Pangkung complex, accessible via concrete stairs and a bridge, where fragments of Buddha statues and hermitage alcoves are preserved. The temple's unique structure, differing from typical Balinese temples, offers a cool, tranquil, and deeply spiritual atmosphere, inviting visitors to delve into the rich history of Hinduism and Buddhism in Bali.
