Gunung Kawi Temple
Ancient Royal Tombs in Poet of Mountain with Collection of Historical Candi
Nestled in Tampaksiring, Bali, Gunung Kawi Temple is often referred to as Bali's own Valley of the Kings. This remarkable historical site features a collection of ten ancient candi, or rock-cut shrines, beautifully carved into the valley walls on both sides of the sacred Pekerisan River. Surrounded by lush rice fields and dense jungle, the temple offers a serene and picturesque setting. Dating back to the 11th century, these monumental structures are believed to be memorials to deified royalty, particularly King Anak Wungsu (AD 1050-1080) and his wives, designed to house their souls. The unique candi, shaped like burial towers, preserve significant historical value, offering a glimpse into ancient Balinese life and royal burial systems. The holy waters of the Pekerisan River flowing through the complex are thought to sanctify this tranquil and historically rich destination.
